RIP Bernie Wrightson, Celebrated Comic Book Artist and Horror Illustrator 1948 – 2017

The comic book world suffered a huge lost this past weekend.  Acclaimed comic book artist and horror illustrator, Bernard Albert “Bernie” Wrightson, sometimes credited as Bernie Wrightson—has died following a long battle with brain cancer.  Recognized as one of his generation’s greatest art masters of horror illustration and comics, Bernie was known for his iconic Frankenstein illustrations and co-creating DC Comics’ movie-starring creature, Swamp Thing.  He also worked on popular comic book titles such as Spider-Man, Batman, Doctor Strange and The Punisher.

In addition to comic books, he worked on conceptual art projects for various films such as Galaxy QuestGhostbusters, and Land of the Dead.  He also collaborated with another horror maestro, Stephen king.  He drew posters for Creepshow and illustrations for the restored edition of The Stand.  I remember personally meeting Bernie at New York Comic Con, approximately 7-8 years ago, and my impression of him was that he was a remarkably humble and selfless person… just a real genuine guy.  I was picking his brain and asking him for all kinds of advice and tips about the comic book industry.  Bernie is survived by his wife, Liz, his two sons, Jeffrey and John, and a stepson, Thomas Adamson.  His full obituary can be found here: http://berniewrightson.com

To honor the late, legendary artist, it was a great pleasure for me to put together a brief retrospective of some of his works that he completed throughout his illustrious career.  Thank you Bernie for inspiring us all with your wonderful talent in art.  Your artistry will live on forever.  Rest easy, my friend.
